“Look” is the most important factor kept in mind while selection of your favorite set of wheels. However in today’s time when markets are flooded with a number of rims, it becomes important to understand other important factors before making any purchase.
There are different types of rims varying in design, price, size, and weight and mounting options for e.g. spinning rims, chrome rimes, truck rims, American racing rims or custom rims etc. Present day rims are more advanced that lend comfort and exclusivity to the vehicle. The style ranges from regular 5 spoke alloy wheel to latest chrome spinning wheels.
Material: Steel rims were used in earlier car models and are rarely used now because of their heavy weight, which reduce the car performance. The present day alloy rims (blend of different metals) have replaced still rims to a greater extent because they are very light are most commonly used in the city commuting. They enhance mileage and dissipate heat rapidly. They are known for their shiny exterior. They are x-rayed and heat tempered to make them more durable and look elegant.
Design: The rims are also categorized on the basis of their design. Wire-spoke variety was the earliest type of rim under this category. They were light, yet strong. Acceleration, breaking and turning was kept in mind while designing those rims. However steel which has a good tensile strength was used for the construction of spokes. ‘Pressed steel wheels’ is another type of rim but it is used very rarely.
Size: Rims are available in various sizes which vary from 13 inches in diameter to 27 inches and even more. Certain vehicles like SUVs are better suited with bigger and broader set of wheels. In cases of rear wheel drive vehicles, a difference of 2 inch between the front and rear rims should be kept in order to avoid any imbalance.
